POOL, RING
Sonya came up
from the water
with a ring on. Thad
had proposed in the water,
and she’d gone under,
then said yes
at guard station #4,
her shift spent,
her tube and cup, left.
You know I loved her.
Sonya ruffled my hair
when she went that night,
the pool lights humming
blue and green,
my hair wet, her hands hot
as pavement, as sand and glass,
as chlorine tank, as a stone
left all day in the sun.
